When to Schedule Your Beach Photography Session
The difference between a good beach photo and a stunning one often comes down to timing. Here's what you need to know about South Florida light.
Golden Hour: The Gold Standard
Golden hour — the hour before sunset — is when beach photography is at its best. The sun sits low on the horizon, casting warm, diffused light that wraps around you evenly. Shadows soften. Skin tones glow. The ocean takes on that golden shimmer that no filter can replicate.
In South Florida, golden hour shifts with the seasons:
- Summer (June–August): Sunset around 8:15 PM — shoot at 7:00–8:00 PM
- Fall (September–November): Sunset around 6:45 PM — shoot at 5:45–6:45 PM
- Winter (December–February): Sunset around 5:45 PM — shoot at 4:45–5:45 PM
- Spring (March–May): Sunset around 7:30 PM — shoot at 6:30–7:30 PM
Why Not Midday?
Overhead sun creates harsh shadows under eyes, chin, and nose. Colors wash out. You squint. The sand reflects bright light upward, creating unflattering highlights. There's a reason photographers avoid noon on the beach — even the most beautiful location can't fix bad light.
Morning Sessions
The hour after sunrise is the underrated alternative. The beach is quieter, the light is soft and clean, and temperatures are comfortable — especially important in summer when evenings stay hot and humid. Morning sessions work particularly well for families with young children.
Overcast Days
Don't panic if clouds roll in. Light overcast acts like a giant softbox — it diffuses light evenly across the entire beach. No harsh shadows, no squinting, and the ocean often takes on moody, dramatic tones. Some of our favorite images were shot under cloud cover.
